Named in Classic FM’s ’30 under 30′, Daniel Shao is one of the leading flautists of his generation, and recently won the Royal Over-Seas League Wind Competition. For this specially-curated programme featuring Mozart, Vivaldi, Copland, and more, he is joined by other emerging artists in a programme spanning some three centuries. Jen graduated from Leeds College of Music (Leeds Conservatoire) with a 1st class Honours degree. She has been awarded numerous awards and scholarships, including the John Sheerer Prize for Woodwind, and the Arnold and Marjorie Ziff Concerto Award. Jen has studied under Rachel Holt, Clare Southworth, Wissam Boustany, and undertaken masterclasses with Trevor Wye and Peter Lloyd. Jen currently studies under Alena Walentin (international soloist, orchestral player and teacher at conservatoires around the world) and Luke O’Toole (Principal Flute at Opera North). 

Jen has performed as a soloist internationally and at venues across the UK, including Buxton Opera House where she performed the Ibert Flute Concerto with orchestral backing. In addition to her performing career, Jen has over 15 years of teaching experience, with a particular interest in teaching students of grade 8 and above. 

Jen is currently performing as a soloist at venues across England with renowned pianist Joanna Garcia. These include: St. Brides Church on Fleet Street, London; St. Paul's Church, Bedford; Lincoln and Worcester Cathedrals. Alongside her busy schedule, she is she is undertaking the highly-regarded MMus in Performance at the University of Leeds.

Join renowned British low flute specialist, Carla Rees and Flutes & Co in a day dedicated to flutes and flute playing. This fun and informative day will cover articulation, breathing, intonation and ensemble playing. 

 Participants will book a place on either the morning or afternoon low flute workshop with Carla and are also welcome to join members of Flutes & Co in the morning or afternoon (or both) for C-flutes play sessions led by Flutes & Co Musical Director Sue Nicholls, sight reading a range of flute choir repertoire.

Bring your own alto, bass or contrabass flute or you may be able to borrow one from Flutes & Co. Priority will be given to Flutes & Co members.

We recommend a minimum equivalent playing standard of grade 5 for you to get the most out of the day. Under 18s are welcome if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.

A chance to hear two musicians from Oxford Flute Summer School in the beautiful surroundings of South Walsham village in Norfolk!

All proceeds from this summer concert given by flautist Katie Bycroft and pianist Sally Goodworth will be donated to the Bursary Fund of the Oxford Flute Summer School. The Fund was set up in 1996 by a participant of the summer school who wanted to provide financial support for promising young flute players who would not otherwise be able to attend this long established and highly regarded flute course. The programme will present a beautiful selection of repertoire for flute, alto flute and piano from the 20th century including works by Philippe Gaubert, Anne Boyd, Lennox Berkeley, Vaughan Williams and Cecilia McDowall.

Dedicated to Noemi Gyori, Thaleia Concerto of Christian Mason composed for flute/piccolo and orchestra strives to respond to Debussy’s iconic flute works by relying on Greek mythology as an inspiration. However, rather than centring the world, feelings and desires of Pan towards a nymph as Debussy does in his music, Mason opens up space for a female character of a nymph, to portray her voice and to provide substantial material for a female character to vocalise and detail her sentiments through the sound of the flute and piccolo. The concerto, and the programming of the concert therefore not only celebrate femininity, the capacities of the flute and Debussy’s music, but also reflect on these and their historic content with a contemporary musical and societal perspective. 

After the successful world premiere with the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège under the baton of Gergely Madaras, Noemi Gyori is to perform the UK premiere with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales on 21 June 2024 at 7:30 PM at the Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff.
